Meet Maddison Herrick
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist #132997
A little about myself, I received my Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Chapman University and have always had a passion for helping others with a compassionate and warm understanding. Previously before moving into a private practice setting, I worked in a community clinic and group setting where I saw an array of individuals, adolescents, couples, and families coming with a multitude of presenting issues. I personally have a passion for working with teens, young adults, and individuals of all ages struggling with anxiety, trauma, people pleasing, perfectionist, childhood emotional wounds, chronic illnesses/pain, and/or low self-esteem. Overall, I find great fulfillment and joy in seeing others grow and heal towards a more positive and fulfilled self!
It can help with
I utilize a client-centered approach which focuses on collaborating and meeting the client where they are at and utilizing their personal goals to guide our therapy process. My focus is to provide a safe place for clients to explore their emotions with a warm and empathetic approach making sure each client feels heard and respected. I believe that each client is unique, which allows myself to pull from different treatment modalities depending on what would work best for each individual. Some modalities includes Attachment-based, Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and am also trained in EMDR Therapy. I have also taken multiple advanced EMDR trainings to increase my skillset for clients. I utilize these modalities to help my clients get out of the feeling of being "stuck" and movement towards a more congruent self. My approach focuses on the core work/issue to help move towards long-term success. My focus is building a strong relationship with my clients and being able to provide new perspectives/tools in order for them to create a stronger self-narrative. I truly believe that healing and growing can start at any time or age, please call today to take the first step.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a gold standard research based psychotherapy method. It was originally created for PTSD and has been found to be effective for anxiety, depression, other distressing life experiences, childhood trauma, phobias, chronic illness/chronic pain, grief, and eating disorders. EMDR is different than other modalities and great for returning therapy clients or new to therapy clients.
How I explain EMDR to clients includes an understanding of how their past experiences effect their current distress/triggers. Traumas and other life events can often have us feeling “stuck” leaving our wounds unable to process and heal properly. The goal of EMDR is to have us get “unstuck” and allow our brain to heal itself properly typically leading to less triggers/automatic responses in our day to day lives. EMDR focuses not just on the event, but also our thoughts, emotions, and body responses allowing us to process more effectively while staying in a window of tolerance aka without re-triggering the event.
EMDR is a process and can look different for each client, please feel free to reach out if interested in EMDR or wanting to see if it may be a good fit for you! For more information you can also visit www.emdria.org or www.emdr.com.
